But the moment he meets Clara Morgan, a fearless investigative journalist with the task of unmasking the conspiracy of The Order of the Dawn, his reality begins to crumble. Clara's pursuit of the truth brings her dangerously close to Victor's secrets—and to the one thing he's vowed never to have again: love. As their age-old enemies converge and time unravels before them, Clara and Victor are torn between light and dark, destiny and desire. In order to save the world—and themselves—they must face their darkest fears. But in the darkness, love is the most deadly threat of all.

Chapter 1

The air of the evening was thick with rain scent, the city that was spread out before him thrumming with vitality as its inhabitants moved their days to and fro, oblivious to the gaze of the ancients that protected them. Victor Blackwood stood in the penthouse suite of Blackwood Tower, his angular face illuminated by the soft glow of city lights. Rain ran down the glass, veiling the world outside, just as the memories that beleaguered him. Victor—or Aiden Thorne, as he was known once—was not a man.

He was a vampire, an immortal being who had walked the earth for over a thousand years. In all that time, he had seen empires rise and crumble, had shared meat with kings and whispered in the ears of tyrants.

But with the passage of centuries, he had perfected the art of transforming, of being invisible in plain view. He had become Victor Blackwood, a self-isolated billionaire with a reputation for ruthless business practices and an uncertain past.

Tonight, however, something was not quite right. A sense of foreboding had fallen on him, one he had not experienced in centuries.

He could feel the weight of time pressing down upon him, and with it, the sense of foreboding that the carefully constructed life he had forged was about to disintegrate. His phone rang, shattering the silence in the room.

Victor turned away from the window and picked it up, reading a note from his secretary, Evelyn. She was one of the few individuals who knew some of his secrets, but not all. Evelyn: The Order of the Dawn have been calling again. They've made their attempts more powerful. We need to discuss.

Victor's eyes shut.

The Order of the Dawn had been a thorn in his side, an illegal group that hunted beings like himself. They had become bolder and bolder in recent months, probing at his past, snooping where they had no business. It was only a matter of time before they came too deep.

He snapped a response into the phone, and then put it aside. He needed to think, to prepare. But as he stood at the window once more, his mind was drawn to another, more unsettling problem—Clara.

Clara had been an unexpected problem.

A journalist with a keen mind and an unceasing curiosity, she had started prying into The Order of the Dawn. Their lives had crossed in a way that was almost preordained, and to his good sense, Victor had been drawn to her. She was the most unlike human being he had encountered in centuries—assertive, intelligent, and unyielding. And yet threatening. The closer she drew to the truth, the more danger she was in.

Victor clenched his jaw, his reflection in the glass barely recognizable.

He had lost hope for personal relationships years before; they only led to heartache and loss. But Clara… Clara was different.

A knock at the door interrupted him from his trance. It was Evelyn, her expression grave as she entered the room. She handed him a dossier into his palms, the expression on her face not betraying the urgency of the matter. "They've gained ground," she replied, her voice husky. "The Order has learned that there is a connection between Blackwood Industries and a series of events that stretches back over a hundred years. They're starting to understand. "Victor flipped through papers, his eyes scanning the pages. The Order was further along than he'd expected.

Too far along. "They need to be stopped," he stated, his voice cold and commanding. "We cannot let them come any closer. "Evelyn nodded. "I've already put some things in place, but we may need to talk about more. drastic measures. "Victor regarded her, and he knew what she said. But the prospect of violence filled him with a heavy weight. Centuries of avoiding bloodshed where it wasn't necessary had made him a master of manipulation and sabotage, always striking from the shadows. Now, though, he had no other option.

"Do whatever needs to be done," he said after a pause. "But don't involve Clara. She's not directly involved with The Order.

Evelyn raised an eyebrow but said nothing. She began to walk off, but Victor's words stopped her." And Evelyn," he said softly, "watch over Clara. Be careful of her. Protect her. "Evelyn nodded once more and left the room, allowing Victor to mull over things in his mind. He gazed out the window at the city again, the lights below glinting like stars within a tempestuous sky. He had traversed a multitude of storms, had weathered the winds of time, yet this one was unique.

This one was personal.

And as the rain continued to pour, Victor swore silently. He would fight for the life he had built, the secrets which he had so long concealed. And he would fight for Clara, at any cost. But deep inside himself, he knew that the storm was coming, and when it did, nothing would ever be the same again.

Clara Hastings hunched over in the corner of her favorite café, her laptop glowing softly as she hammered out the words. Her tale was meant to expose corruption within the city's political establishment, one she had spent months building. Tonight, however, she could not keep her mind on her work, her thoughts drifting back to enigmatic Victor Blackwood.

Victor had been a mystery she hadn't intended to crack. He was the world's most elusive billionaire, renowned for his vast fortunes and influence but mysterious in a way that intrigued her.

Clara had worked with enough powerful men in her line of work, but none had intrigued her as Victor. There was something about him—something brooding and dangerous and deep, deep down. Her investigation of The Order of the Dawn had been a tangent, one fed by rumors of secret societies and urban myth. She had stumbled upon the name while working on coverage of a very different story, and her curiosity had led her down a rabbit hole of ancient conspiracies and supernatural myth. The deeper she went, the more she found that there were ties between The Order and several of the high-powered players, including Victor Blackwood.

She hesitated, looking at the screen, the cursor blinking insistently. The dossier she had found—one that Victor was not even aware she had—was in her bag, heavy with secrets. It contained a century's worth of history about Blackwood Industries, full of gaps and discrepancies that suggested that there was a great deal more to the story. The dates were not correct, the names shifted, and there were too many loose ends for her to ignore. Clara was about to confront Victor when she was kidnapped by agents of The Order. They had interrogated her, searching for intel that she did not have—or at least information that she had chosen not to reveal.

Victor was the one who saved her, materializing out of thin air like a phantom, dispatching her kidnappers in a manner that still echoed in her memory. Ever since the evening, her feelings about Victor had been a tangled mess of fear, attraction, and suspicion. She couldn't deny the way he attracted her, but she couldn't shake the shadows that loomed behind him either. Her phone beeped, and she checked the screen, hoping to see a message from her editor. But there, it was a text from Victor

Victor: Let's talk tonight. Meet me at the tower.

".Clara's heart skipped a beat. Victor's notes were usually curt and brief, but this one was different. There was some sense of urgency she had not previously experienced. She quickly saved her work and rounded up her things, her mind racing with questions. Coming out into the cold night, the wind tangled in her hair and she pulled her coat close around her. The streets were deserted, the usual noise of the city muffled by the late hour.

She hailed a cab and directed the driver to take her to Blackwood Tower, her mind replaying every word she'd ever exchanged with Victor since she met him. She had been feeling a sick to her stomach before she got there, and the unease in her stomach had escalated into a sheer terror by the time she stood outside the tower. The tower loomed above her, a steel and glass monolith that reflected the city lights. She hesitated for an instant at the entrance, half of her considering turning around. But she was too deep in now—she had to follow this through.

The elevator ride to the penthouse was silent, aside from the hum of the machinery. When the doors opened, Victor stood waiting for her. He took his position in the room, his face expressionless as he invited her in. "Clara," he said, his voice low and smooth, sending shivers up her arm. "Thank you for calling." "Victor," she answered, her tone firm even with the storm brewing within her.

"What is it? Why did you want to see me?"

He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he led her to the sitting room, where a fire flickered in the fireplace, casting golden light dancing about the room. The juxtaposition between the high-tech sleekness of the penthouse and the primal shine of the fire unsettled her, as if she entered a place where time would not quite go as it should. Victor offered her a glass of wine, and she took it from him with a nod, but did not drink. He sat opposite her, looking at her intently, and for a moment, neither of them said a word.

"I need to explain something to you," Victor said, eventually breaking the silence.

"There are some things you should know—things you should not know, because they are dangerous, but you must." Clara's heart pounded. "This has to do with The Order, doesn't it? And you." "Yes," he confirmed, his voice stern but shaky under the weight of a millennium. "The Order of the Dawn has menaced my people for centuries. They are at hand now to reveal the truth." "And what truth is that?" Clara asked, her reporter instincts asserting themselves. "Who are you, Victor?

He moved closer, his eyes fastening on hers with such intensity that a chill ran down her spine. "I am not what you think me to be. I am not like the other men, Clara.

I am something much older… and much more wicked.

"Even before Clara was able to talk, the penthouse lights flickered and there was a low hum around them. Victor's expression shifted, his eyes compressing as he sprang upright. He approached the window and peered over the city below him, his tension-coiled body prepared. "They're here," he snarled, more to himself than to her. "Who?" Clara got up too, danger now all too evident. "Get out, Victor said, turning back to her. "They've found us. "The windows shattered as if on a signal, and in masks and black, men poured into the room, guns up. Clara's heart racing, she backed away, fear mounting, but Victor had moved with unholy speed, his arm around her shoulder, gripping her hard. "Get behind me," he commanded, his voice firm.

The attackers did not tarry. They rushed at Victor, but he was more agile, more powerful than a man. He skipped aside like a specter, disarming and incapacitating them with brutal precision. Clara watched in awe as Victor revealed his real face, eyes blazing with supernatural light, movements too swift to be human. But as he repelled them, more came, flooding into the penthouse from every direction. Clara's terror grew as she realized they were outnumbered and despite Victor's immense powers, they were being pushed back.

"Victor!" she shouted in terror.

He turned to her, his expression stern. "We have to leave. Now.

".He did not even wait for them to answer before he pulled her towards the elevator, but one of the attackers stood in their path. Victor snarled, displaying his fangs, and with one swift movement, he dispatched the attacker. The doors of the elevator closed immediately behind them as the other attackers followed. As the elevator descended, Clara's heart pounded in her chest, the nightmarish realization of what she had witnessed hitting her. Victor wasn't a regular human being—he was something considerably worse.

By the time the doors did open on the ground floor, Victor led her from the building and into an awaiting motorcar, his urgency palpable. "Where are we going?" Clara asked, shaking. "We're going to get you somewhere safe," Victor said curtly, propelling her toward the vehicle. “To a place where they can’t find us,” Victor replied, his eyes still glowing with that eerie light. “You’re in danger now, Clara. And I’m the only one who can protect you.” As the car sped through the city streets, Clara’s mind raced. The world she thought she knew had just been shattered, and the man she had been investigating was far more than she could have ever imagined.

Chapter 2

The car zoomed down the streets that were shadowy, city lights merging together as they sped by. Clara sat beside him in the passenger seat, shaking with her hands as she tried to comprehend what had just happened. Victor gripped tightly to the steering wheel, his eyes only on the road ahead, every muscle in his body tense. "Victor, what went on there?" Clara's voice quivered, a mixture of fear and incredulous layered in the words. "You know." Victor's tone was even but flavored with urgency.

"The Order has hunted me for centuries, and now they have moved."

Hunting you? Why? What are you?" Clara asked, her mind still reeling from the sight of Victor's unnatural speed, the hot-coal eyes, and how he had taken down the attackers with a power not of this world.

Victor didn't respond immediately, his jaw grinding as he steered the car through the narrow streets. Finally, he spoke, his tone softer, as if he was sorry. "I did not wish for you to learn about it in such a
