Cara was chosen to marry into the most wealthiest and influential family not just in her country but in the world. A family that reckoned with dignitaries from around the globe. Her husband to be was Elliot Manchester, a spineless man with a lot of dark secrets. The C.E.O of Groove enterprise, heir to the wealth of the Manchesters. Cara didn't know of the failures of her would be husband, neither did she know he was just a clowned C.E.O/Heir. But perhaps underneath his clown facade, there was more to Elliot Manchester that meets the eye.
I watched the chauffeur's condescending glare fall on me as we drove through the old abandoned manor on the outskirts of town.
He kept glaring at me from the rearview mirror as I remained ambivalent about my present predicament. he would be the first to love the fact that I am being shipped off to the middle of nowhere to get married, he never liked me, and I am not sure why.
Yes, I am being shipped off to be married to maybe some old, miserable, wrinkled face man, or maybe a young man with disabilities confined to a wheelchair, or a man with a disfigured face because I wonder why the anonymity of man I am supposed to get married to.
I am doing this for my mother because she is all I have and this is what she wants from me, how can I say no to my dear mother?
"I need to talk to you," my mum had muttered to me some days back, little did I know that the trajectories of my life were about to take a dark turn.
"What is it, mum? It is already midnight, can't this wait till morning," I pleaded, slowly rising from my bed with my hands spread apart in the air, yawning.
"No, it can't wait we need to talk now,"
I stared at her and saw that she was dead serious.
"What is it, mum?" I asked, trying to get the conversation over with so I could go back to my beauty sleep.
She took a deep breath in, her eyes piercing deep into mine.
"You are aware when your father died, he left us with nothing and we almost lost everything,"
"Yes," I took in a deep breath knowing that it was going to be a long painful conversation as it is always an emotional moment for us as my dad left us when we needed him the most, I was just eight and all my memories of him were still intact, all my memories.
I love my father, he seemed like a pretty decent and loving man. He was my mother's soulmate, I am sure he still is, she often says that when he died a part of her soul died with him, I can't begins to phantom at what point you get so engrossed with love that you give another human that much access to your life. I am not sure I could ever reach that point.
"I also told you we were eating crumbs of bread not until an intervention came and that was how we were able to survive all this year and live in a decent house," she paused and let out an exasperated breath, she always gets this emotional whenever she talks about my father. "That was able to strive for you to go to a decent school, it has been a rollercoaster of ups and down for us but we pull through together,"
Yes, I had always had my mum, we had always had each other to lean on.
"Yes," I said calmly as my eyes became teary, I didn't want to cry and my eyes were heavy, and all I wanted at that moment was to sink back into my bed.
She took a deep breath again and slowly let it out. "What I didn't tell you was that I had an arrangement with this guidance angel of ours,"
My eyes widened for the first time in the course of this conversation, "What kind of agreement?" I asked and she stared at me for a second.
"We agreed that when you are eighteen years you would be married off to the heir,"
"The heir__The heir of what?" I stuttered as my hands clenched hard on each other, that is how I respond to shock, my mum said when she sat me down when I was a kid, to tell me of my father's demise I just glared at her clenching my fist together.
"The heir to the Manchester family," she responded In a low tone, her voice losing an octave.
I stood up abruptly from my bed and paced around the room, "You mean to say, that you bethroled me to some heir without my permission and you are just getting to inform me now is this life-wrecking piece of information now," I was visibly angry and one could tell from my voice that I was beyond angry, I was mad, furious to say the least.
"I had no choice then, we were broke and they offered to help,"
"Help," I scoffed.
"Yes, help, Cara," she paused and let out another exasperated breath. "Your father left us with nothing, we were hopeless and they came to offer all the help we needed with the simple condition that once you are of age, you would get married to the heir,"
"You call that a simple condition, how is that a smile condition? How could you do this to me, Mum? You never told me" I was getting agitated and struggling to grapple with the current reality being shoved into my face.
"It isn't as bad as you think Cara, this is a wealthy family, and you will have everything you ever wanted," my mum replied calmly.
"I don't want to get married to some wealthy family, it is my life and I have total control over it, this isn't the eighteenth century that you can force me into a marriage I do not wish to participate in,"
I could see her fall silent, I thought I had won this battle and was about to have my victory dance then she stood up.
"Everything is set, all ready for you to move into the Manchester villa," she paused and glanced at me where I stood arms crossed around my stomach, scowling and glaring at her dead in the eyes.
I love my mum but I can't believe she would do this to me, and keep such a huge secret from me.
"Cara, it is set and there isn't any other option left,"
The last statement made my world come crashing down on me.
I took a deep breath as I accepted my fate, sealed in the arms of an unknown heir.
"Okay Mum, I will do it for you,"
She pulled me into a bare hug, "It will be all fine darling,"
Now, here I was being shipped off to my ultimate doom.
"We are here," Jason, the chauffeur announced and I stare through the window, and my eyes widened in disbelief.
As we approached the magnificent mansion, my breath caught in my throat at the sheer size and beauty of the property. The grand estate sprawled across a wide expanse of land, commanding attention and showcasing its opulence. It was evident that no expense had been spared in creating this architectural marvel.
The mansion stood proudly, surrounded by meticulously landscaped gardens that seemed to stretch for miles. Vibrant flowers bloomed in an array of colors, while perfectly manicured lawns added a touch of serenity to the scene. Tall, stately trees provided shade and added to the overall charm of the property.
My eyes were immediately drawn to the grand entrance, framed by majestic columns that seemed to reach for the sky. The doors, crafted from rich, dark wood, were adorned with intricate carvings and gilded accents, hinting at the beauty that lay within.
" This is magnificent," I remarked, I never knew there was such a magnificent wonder just a few miles away from town.
As I marveled at the mansion's exterior, my gaze was drawn to the expansive windows that lined its walls. These windows, with their symmetrical placement, allowed an abundance of natural light to flood the interior, casting a warm and inviting glow. The ornamental frames surrounding the windows added a touch of elegance, and I imagined the breathtaking views that awaited from within.
"Maybe it wouldn't be as bad as I thought, there are worse fates than being married Into a family with such wealth,"
Surrounding the mansion, the vast estate seemed to stretch as far as the eye could see. Rolling lawns, impeccably trimmed hedges, and carefully placed flower beds created a harmonious blend of formal elegance and natural beauty. Stone pathways meandered through the grounds, leading to secluded seating areas and charming gazebos, inviting residents and guests to immerse themselves in the tranquility of their surroundings.
At that moment, I realized that this big mansion, with its vast archers of land and stunning exterior, was a true masterpiece. Its allure and charm were undeniable, leaving me eager to explore the wonders that lay beyond its majestic entrance.
As I got out of the car, still trying to contain my amusement, I was approached by a tall man with a well-built stature, standing close to an older woman dressed in a fancy suit and adorned with golden ornaments.
"Ms. Cara," He greeted.
"Mr. Manchester," I assumed him to be.
"Don't be silly girl, this is just the butler, here to serve your every need,"
The older woman corrected, she wasn't smiling.
Did she just call me "Girl"
"I am Mrs. Rodriguez Manchester but you can call me Mrs. Rodriguez," I stretched out my hands to greet her but she glared at me with a condescending look.
"When you are freshened up, come meet me in my office. We need to set some ground rules," she said and turned back, walking back into the house.
What the hell just happened? What does she mean by ground rules?
This is my new reality, and I am going to face it with my head held high.
It has been two days since I stepped my legs into this gigantic mansion.
After two uneventful days, Mrs. Rodriguez greeted me with a lot of rules and so many guidelines that I was beginning to wonder if I was in a prison or my new home.
"You are going to be married to Elliot as soon as he is back,"
"Back from where?" I asked inquisitively, my heartbeat elevated and my hot heaving breath could be heard in the room. I need to grab a hold of myself. Mrs. Rodriguez cast a glare upon me, her eyes studying me.
"You are too slim," she finally remarked after gazing upon me for some seconds.
I would consider my weight pretty decent for my age and someone who had battled with anorexia before, but I had managed to pull up a healthy weight.
"Okay ma'am, " I simply said, reminding myself I was doing this for my mother.
"You are forbidden from going anywhere close to the east wing of the house, you are onl
