Deskripsi

Stacy knew her husband only saw her as a replacement for his one and only wife. She was nothing more than a contract on paper, just a signature to silence his demanding parents and the press from constant questions about his love life. Evand never loved her, never cared for her, was always cold and distant – but she had a hope that maybe, he’d love her one day. And that hope got crushed when Joanne, his first love, suddenly came back. Evand demanded divorce right away. Except he didn’t know Stacy was pregnant with his son. Discarded and abandoned, she started a new life, raising her son as a single mother… Until 6 years later, she stumbles into her ex-husband.

Chapter 1

“I don’t love you, Stacy, and you know it. Can you be a good wife and shut up for one day?”

I stand in the doorway of the living room, my fingers twisting the edge of my silk blouse.

Evand sits in the leather armchair, scrolling through his phone, the sharp line of his jaw set in that familiar, distant way that always makes my chest tighten.

“I asked the chef to prepare the salmon you like,” I say, stepping closer, my voice soft but hopeful. “We could eat together tonight. Just the two of us. You’ve been working so late lately, and I thought maybe we could talk... Really talk.”

“I’m not hungry.” He doesn’t look up. The words cut clean, like ice. “I have a meeting.”

My stomach drops.

I force a small smile, moving to the side of his chair. “Evand, please. Just one hour. We haven’t shared a meal in weeks. I miss talking to you. I miss sitting across from you without the phone between us. Can’t we try?”

He finally lifts his eyes, cold grey and unreadable.

“Stacy, stop. I don’t have time for this.” He stands, towering over me in his tailored black suit, already reaching for his coat. “You’re being dramatic again. I told you this morning I would be late.”

“I’m not dramatic,” I whisper, the ache spreading under my ribs. “I’m your wife. I just want one evening where you don’t leave the second you walk through the door. Is that so much to ask? The table is set. Your favorite wine is breathing.”

He buttons his coat with precise, unhurried movements. “You knew what this marriage was when you signed the papers. Don’t start pretending it’s something else now. Dinner can wait. The company cannot.”

The words land harder than any slap. My throat burns. “I never pretended. I only hoped you’d eventually see me as more than a signature to quiet your parents and the press. I still hope, Evand.”

He pauses at the door, hand on the handle, and glances back with something close to irritation.

“Hope is for people who have nothing better to do. You always knew I’ll never love you. I have a company to run. Stop waiting up.”

The door closes behind him with a soft, final click.

I stay frozen in the middle of the room, the silence pressing in until my eyes sting. The chef’s careful dinner waits in the kitchen, already growing cold.

My hands curl into fists at my sides.

Again.

A soft knock breaks the quiet. One of the maids steps inside, eyes lowered.

“Mrs. Grey, the car will be ready in an hour. Mrs. Grey Senior expects you at the charity gala this evening. Your gown has been pressed and laid out in the master suite.”

I nod, wiping my eyes dry. “Thank you. I’ll manage.”

Two hours later the ballroom of the Grand Aurora Hotel blazes with crystal chandeliers and gold leaf.

Champagne flutes catch the light like tiny stars. I stand near a tall arrangement of white roses, the deep emerald silk of my gown whispering against the marble floor. Guests drift past in black ties and diamonds, their laughter bright and effortless.

Milena Grey settles into the empty chair beside me without invitation. Her silver hair is coiled in a perfect chignon, her posture regal and unforgiving. She studies me over the rim of her glass.

My husband’s mother never favored me.

“That dress is acceptable,” she says, her tone clipped. “But the way you hold your shoulders makes you look uncertain. A Grey wife does not look uncertain in public.”

I keep my smile in place even as heat crawls up my neck. “I’ll try harder, Mrs. Grey.”

“See that you do.” Her gaze sweeps the room, sharp and assessing. “And where is my son? A proper wife ensures her husband stands at her side for events like this. People are already noticing his absence. Whispers start quickly in these circles.”

My fingers tighten around the stem of my untouched champagne. Across the ballroom I catch two women glancing our way, their heads tilting together. Another man checks his watch and murmurs something to his companion. The space beside me feels larger with every passing minute.

“He said he had a meeting,” I answer quietly. “I’m sure he’ll arrive soon.”

Milena’s lips thin. “Meetings do not last forever. If you cannot keep his attention, someone else will. Remember that, Stacy. Appearance is everything in this family.”

The orchestra swells into a new piece. I force myself to breathe evenly, to ignore the way my pulse hammers in my throat. The weight of every polite stare presses harder. I can almost hear the questions forming:

Where is Evand Grey? Why is his wife alone again?

Then the double doors at the far end of the ballroom open.

Conversation falters. Heads turn.

Evand steps through, tall and impeccable in the same black suit he wore when he left me.

His hand rests lightly at the small of a woman’s back, guiding her forward as if she belongs there.

Joanne Quinn moves with effortless grace, her pale gold gown catching every light, her dark hair cascading over one shoulder. She looks exactly as she did in the photographs from years ago—beautiful, confident, and entirely at home on his arm.

My champagne glass slips an inch in my grip. The room tilts for a single heartbeat. Heat floods my face, then drains away, leaving me cold.

They walk deeper into the gala, and every eye follows them. Evand’s expression remains cold, controlled, but he does not look for me.

Joanne’s smile is soft, almost triumphant, as she leans in to say something only he can hear. Her fingers rest possessively against his sleeve.

Milena’s chair creaks as she sits up straighter. The whispers around us sharpen into something sharper than curiosity.

I cannot move. I cannot breathe.

My husband just brought his first love by his hand.

Chapter 2

The ballroom spins around me.

Crystal lights blur into streaks of gold. Whispered voices rise like a rising tide, sharp and hungry. Every face turns toward Evand and the woman on his arm.

Joanne Quinn stands close enough that the pale gold of her gown brushes his sleeve, her smile soft and certain.

My fingers dig into the stem of the champagne glass until it threatens to snap. Heat floods my face. The emerald silk of my dress suddenly feels too tight, too visible under all those watching eyes.

I force my legs to move. Crossing the floor feels like walking through water. Guests part for me without speaking, their eyes sliding from my face to Evand’s and back again.

When I reach them, Joanne’s gaze flicks over me once, cool and dismissive, before she looks away as if I am already dismissed from the conversation.

“Evand.” My voice comes out low, almost steady. “We need to talk. Now.”

He turns his head slowly, grey eyes flat and uninterested
