The sounds of wolves growling echoed around me. I didn't know where they were coming from or how close they were. All I knew was that Mama said run. So I did. I ran as fast as my little legs could carry me down the hallway and into my mother's bedroom. I could hear the sounds of fighting outside and the panic-filled screams of my mama. She was calling for me, but I was too scared to answer her. I didn't understand what was happening. I crawled under the bed and tried to calm the frantic beating of my heart as I clutched the stuffed llama to my chest. It was the only thing I really wanted for my birthday. Today was supposed to be a good day. She said I was turning the big 5. I was supposed to be having a birthday party, but as I listened to the balloons popping and the screaming of the other children inside the pack house, I cried silent tears.
"Adelynne?! Baby, where are you?" My mama loudly whispered as she entered the bedroom.
