Anotación

After inheriting her late father’s burned-down motorcycle garage, Zoe Carter discovers she’s also inherited a crushing debt to the notorious Kings of Chaos MC. Instead of taking her garage, three dangerous bikers offer her a deal: rebuild their championship motorcycles, and they’ll delay collecting the debt. But as they uncover a deadly sabotage plot tied to her father’s death, loyalty, love, and revenge collide in a race where losing could cost them everything.

Chapter 1

Zoe

The phone call came at 2am, and I knew before I even answered it that something was wrong. Nobody calls at 2am with good news.

"Zoe." My uncle's voice was shaking. "The garage. You need to get down here now."

I didn't remember grabbing my keys. I didn't remember the drive. One second I was standing in my kitchen with my heart slamming against my ribs, and the next I was standing across the street from my father's shop, watching it burn.

The flames were taller than the building. Orange and furious, eating through the roof my dad had patched with his own hands three summers ago. Black smoke rolled up into the night sky and blotted out the stars, and I just stood there, frozen, while firefighters shouted and hoses hissed and someone kept telling me to step back.

I didn't step back. I couldn't move at all.

That garage had been in my family for three generations. My grandfather built the first workbench with lumber he salvaged from a demolition site. My father learned to rebuild his first carburetor on that same bench when he was twelve years old. And I grew up underneath it, literally, handing my dad wrenches before I could tie my own shoes.

Now it was ash.

By the time the firefighters got the blaze under control, there wasn't much left to save. The office was gone. The lifts were warped and blackened. The old neon sign that used to hang over the front door, the one that said CARTER'S CUSTOM CYCLES in cheerful red letters, had melted into something unrecognizable.

I sat on the curb until the sun came up, wrapped in a scratchy blanket someone had put around my shoulders, and I didn't cry. I think I was too shocked to cry. My father died eight months ago and I thought I'd already lost everything I could lose. Turns out I was wrong.

The fire chief crouched down next to me around dawn, his face smudged with soot, his eyes tired and careful in the way people get when they're about to say something you don't want to hear.

"Miss Carter, I have to be straight with you." He glanced back at the smoldering wreck of the building. "This doesn't look like an accident. The burn pattern, the way it moved through the structure. We're going to need to open an investigation."

"You're saying someone did this on purpose."

"I'm saying I can't rule it out." He put a hand on my shoulder, brief and awkward. "I'm sorry."

I nodded because I didn't have any words left. My father was dead. My mother left when I was six and never looked back. And now the one thing I had left of either of them, the one thing that still felt like home, was a pile of ash and twisted metal.

I waited until the firefighters cleared out before I let myself walk through what was left. The ground was still warm under my boots, and everywhere I looked there was something ruined. The parts shelves had collapsed. The old couch in the waiting area, the one with the cigarette burn my dad always meant to fix, was nothing but springs and char.

I almost didn't see the toolbox.

It was sitting near the back wall, half buried under a fallen support beam, and when I pulled the beam off and wiped the soot away, I found it completely untouched. Red metal, dented at the corners, CARTER stenciled on the side in my grandfather's handwriting. Not a single scorch mark on it.

I sat down right there in the wreckage and opened it. Wrenches. Screwdrivers. A photo of me at seven years old, grinning with a smear of grease on my nose, tucked under the top tray where my dad must have kept it for years without me knowing.

That was when I finally cried.

I was still sitting there, hugging that stupid toolbox to my chest, when a car pulled up outside what used to be the front entrance. A man in a gray suit climbed out, clutching a leather folder like it might run away from him. He looked wildly out of place against the wreckage, his shoes too clean, his tie too straight.

"Zoe Carter?" He picked his way toward me, stepping carefully over debris. "I'm Daniel Pierce. I was your father's attorney."

"I didn't know my father had an attorney."

"He hired me about a year ago." Daniel crouched near me, keeping a careful distance from the ash. "There are some things you need to know, and I'm afraid the timing couldn't be worse."

Something cold settled in my stomach. "What kind of things?"

He opened the folder like it weighed a hundred pounds. "Your father took out a significant loan about fourteen months ago. The garage was struggling. Parts costs, the lift replacement, a slow season that nearly put him under. He needed capital fast, and traditional banks wouldn't touch him."

"So where did he get the money?"

Daniel hesitated, and that hesitation told me everything before he even said it.

"The Kings of Chaos Motorcycle Club."

I'd heard of them. Everyone in this town had heard of them. The kind of club people crossed the street to avoid, the kind whose name got said in a lowered voice at the bar.

"How much?" I asked.

Daniel told me the number, and it was so large I actually laughed. A short, broken sound, more panic than humor.

"That's not possible. My dad would never."

"He did it to save the garage, Zoe. He believed he could pay it back." Daniel's voice softened. "But the debt didn't die with him. Under the terms of the agreement, it transfers to his estate. Which means, since you're his sole heir."

"It transfers to me." I said it for him because I couldn't stand to hear him say it.

He nodded, grim. "There's more. I need you to listen carefully, because this part matters most."

I stared at him, at the ruined garage behind him, at the toolbox still clutched against my chest, and I felt the last solid ground under my feet give way.

"The club doesn't wait," Daniel said quietly. "I already received a call this morning. They know about the fire. They know the collateral just burned to the ground." He closed the folder, his hand not quite steady. "They're coming to collect within forty-eight hours, Zoe. And from what I understand about the Kings of Chaos, they don't accept excuses."

Chapter 2

Zoe

I spent the entire next day trying to fix a problem that didn't have a fix.

I started at the bank, sitting across from a loan officer named Greg who kept glancing at the soot still under my fingernails like it might be contagious. I explained the situation. Family business, three generations, temporary setback. Greg nodded along politely and then told me, in the gentlest voice possible, that no bank in the state would lend money against a garage that no longer existed.

"If you had the land," he said, "we could maybe talk. But without a structure, without inventory, without."

"Without anything," I finished for him. "Yeah. I get it."

I tried two more banks after that, and got the same answer with different wording. I called an old family friend who used to buy and flip properties, hoping maybe he'd front me something against future earnings. He laughed before he realized I was serious, then apologized and told me he
