Alex had always been passionate about writing, but struggled with spelling, grammar, and punctuation. In high school, he was part of a group of "at-risk" students from low-income families. Ms. Rodriguez, a new teacher, introduced Alex and his classmates to the power of writing and encouraged them to express themselves in a way they never could before. She also taught the class about famous authors who had overcome adversity to become successful. As the year went on, Alex and his classmates became a community of writers who had found their voice. Alex found his passion and was determined to pursue it. Ms. Rodriguez entered the class in a writing competition and the winner would have their work published in a prestigious literary magazine. Alex and his classmates traveled to the state capital for the awards ceremony and were proud of their accomplishments. As they left, Alex felt a sense of hope that he had found his place in the world.
