“Megan Penswith.” Me!? Did they call my name? No, I must have misheard. “Miss. Penswith, we don’t have all day.” Growls our Alpha. “Step forward.” Oh My Goddess he did! Dropping my head, I reluctantly step forward. Unable to ignore his command. Goddess, I just want to sink into the floor. “Mrs. Harth!” he growls. “Why is Miss. Penswith, so confused as to how she is supposed to be acting?” “I-I- uh… it’s just nerves, Alpha. Sh-she.” “SILENCE!” he roars. “I didn’t ask for your excuses! It’s your job to make sure the girls are match ready! She isn’t even holding her head high! How can we send her to Alpha Zane?” My head snaps to attention. Alpha Zane! No, no, no, no, no. He can’t mean the Alpha of the Dark Moon Pack! Some of the girls gasp, and I don’t blame them. He’s the last Alpha anyone would want as their mate. Not only is he ruthless but he’s already had a Luna and he killed her! No, I won’t do it… For the first time in my life, I’m not going to just stand by and let whatever happens happen. My wolf growls in the back of my mind. Not in anger, but in praise. I’ve decided to stand up for myself in my human form. Squaring my shoulders, I face my Alpha. I know his reaction isn’t going to be good, but I can’t marry Alpha Zane… I won’t. “There! Yes, that!” he shouts. “That’s exactly how you should be standing. Head high, the look of determination, fearless!” Turning towards Mrs. Harth he raises a brow. “Your other girls should use her as an example. Not shrinking back and sniveling like some omega. Get her packed. She leaves tonight!” Wait! What!? No, no, no…. Go figure I finally decided to stand up for myself and I can’t even do that right. The Alpha strides from the room, taking any hope I had with him. Meet Megan, a self-conscious werewolf raised by her grandmother after tragically losing her parents. Despite being ridiculed for her curvy figure, she is chosen as a luna and her mate is none other than the feared Alpha Zane of The Dark Moon Pack, known for his ruthless reputation and rumored to have killed his own mate. Megan must now navigate through treacherous territory and leave her past behind as she faces an uncertain future with her powerful chosen mate.

Chapter 1- Chosen

Me!? Did they call my name? No, I must have misheard.

“Megan Penswith.”

Oh my God, they did! I glance down the line of girls, all looking just as shocked as I am. All of them are beautiful. With their hourglass figures, perfect makeup, perfect hair, cut and styled so it matches each one. They are all perfect and here stands me… No makeup, my hair pulled up in an attempt to tame my dirty blond curls, and a dress that’s definitely not cut to fit my curvy figure.

“Megan!” Snaps Mrs. Harth. “Step forward! You’re embarrassing yourself!”

I want to snort at her. Embarrass me? I think she means her, the pack’s debutante coordinator, and all her work primping and prepping the packs girls for this barbaric mate-picking ceremony. Which nobody ever thought would be me. In fact, I’ve been told this from day one.

Now what am I supposed to do…. Wait! What am I supposed to do!? She never advised me on this step! Always shoving me to the side to go prep the hall, the dresses, or the makeup for the rest of the pack’s star beauties.

Not that it bothered me. I had always been the odd one out. Sure, I came from an old family, but I was the last of them. Well, besides my grandmother. She raised me after my parents died and was the only reason I am standing here. She’d demanded that I have the best of everything. I’d not been allowed to go to the normal pack school. Instead, she insisted I be placed in the pack’s private school. The one reserved for high-ranking werewolves, and high-ranked werewolf females that were raised for one purpose: Luna’s.

A Luna I am not… I lack all the qualities to be, or so I was always told. No matter how hard I tried, I never could hit the mark. I didn’t have the right figure, walk, talk, or temper. The only area I seemed to excel in was combat, but I give full credit to Neka, my wolf. In human form, I’m not a fighter. I’ll avoid it at all costs.

I wish I was more like my grandmother. How I wish I had her backbone. She didn’t take crap from nobody and if you crossed her, may the Goddess help you. But I’m not… So I just stopped trying. I mean, what was the point?

“Miss. Penswith, we don’t have all day.” Growls our Alpha. “Step forward.”

Dropping my head, I reluctantly step forward. Unable to ignore his command. Goddess, I just want to sink into the floor.

“Mrs. Harth!” he growls. “Why is Miss. Penswith, so confused as to how she is supposed to be acting?”

“I-I- uh… it’s just nerves, Alpha. Sh-she.”

“SILENCE!” he roars. “I didn’t ask for your excuses! It’s your job to make sure the girls are match ready! She isn’t even holding her head high! How can we send her to Alpha Zane?”

My head snaps to attention.

She leaves tonight!”

Wait! What!? No, no, no…. Go figure I finally decided to stand up for myself and I can’t even do that right. The Alpha strides from the room, taking any hope I had with him.

Standing outside, I pull my coat closer to my body. The snow has started to fall, just dusting the large pines that surround the hall. It’s my favorite time of the year. We don’t do Christmas. That’s a human thing but the snow. It’s always been my favorite.

How my skin itches to shift. Neka loves to roll in the first fall, but this year we are going to miss it.

Turning, I watch as my luggage is being loaded into an SUV. This can’t be happening. How could it go from no one will ever choose you to load up and gone in an hour!?

“Finally, we got you a mate.”

“GRANDMA!” I scream, spinning around so fast I almost topple over. “I thought I wouldn’t get to say goodbye.”

“Goodbye? What are you babbling about, girl?” she says, motioning to the driver to grab the bag next to her feet. “You honestly believe you’d get rid of me that easily?”

“What!? N-no... B-but!”

“Stop stuttering, girl! That’s no way for the future Luna of Dark Moon to act. I can tell Deborah didn’t do her job!”

“Mrs. Harth did what she was supposed-”

“Oh, stop lying, Megan. We both know she didn’t.” She sighs, motioning for the driver to open the door.

“How are you going? Did the Alpha say you could?”

“Say I could? Haha! Do you think anyone here is going to stop me? I don’t ask Megan, I tell. Something you need to start doing.” She says, glaring at the driver who rushes for the door.

“I can get it!” I say, reaching for the handle.

“No.” she says, grabbing my hand. “A Luna doesn’t open her own door.”

“Luna… I’m not a Luna.”

“What are you saying, girl?” she says, eyeing me. “You were picked, weren’t you? That makes you a Luna.”

“No, grandma it doesn’t.” I sigh, looking at my feet. “They chose wrong. I’m not graceful, I can’t talk right, I’m not even thin like all the other girls!”

“Thin!?” she snorts. “You mean you’re not a bean pole?”

Blinking, I keep my eyes fixed on the ground.

“Megan… My dear girl, look at me.”

Slowly, I meet her gaze.

Gripping my shoulders, she smiles, “You will make an amazing Luna, and I’m not just saying that because you’re my granddaughter. You are a lot stronger than you give yourself credit. Honestly, if it wasn’t required to send you to that school so we could get you a perfect match, I’d not have done it…. But what’s done is done. Now, you’re not doing this alone. I will help advise you, but the rest will be up to you, understand?”

I nod, fighting the lump in my throat. Grandma always had confidence in my abilities. More than I ever had for myself, and I didn’t want to let her down.

“Good,” she says. “Now let’s get in the car. It’s freezing out here.”

Climbing in behind her, I snuggle into the heated seat. Wow, this is nice.

“Don’t get too comfortable.” She says, tapping the glass so the driver will hurry. “We have lots to cover before our arrival.”

A car ride, a plane, and back into another car. I’m exhausted. “How much longer?” I groan, looking at my grandma.

“Getting excited finally?” She asks, flipping through a book.

“How are you not tired?” I ask. “We’ve been up all night?”

“No, you were up all night. I slept on the plane.” She says, eyeing me. “I told you to get some rest. Stressing over everything isn’t going to solve anything.”

“I’m a werewolf, not a bird,” I snap, earning me a raised brow. “Sorry, I’m just tired… and nervous… and, I’d never been on a plane… It was weird, all that pressure in my ears. I thought my head was going to explode.”

“Gum,” she says, turning back to her book.

“Gum? No, I don’t want any G-”

“You chew gum on a plane. It helps.” She says, turning another page.

“Seriously? You could have said something. I kept opening my mouth like a fish gasping for water!” I growl, sinking into the seat. “I might have gotten some sleep.”

“Well, I think you should stay awake for the rest of the ride.”

“Why?” I ask, annoyed. Not that I was planning on sleeping, my nerves wouldn’t allow it. Nor would Neka, who’s been nudging me every hour. Demanding to stretch her legs but it’s not possible right now.

“Because your lack of sleep seems to have strengthened your backbone, and you’re going to want that attitude while meeting with the Alpha.”

“What?” My attitude deflates immediately.

Grandma drops her book, glaring at me. “Deborah really didn’t teach you anything, did she?” My blank stare only confirms her question. “Megan, you were chosen for Alpha Zane, but that doesn’t guarantee he is going to choose you back.”

I can feel all the color draining from my face as her words sink in. Is that what happened to his first Luna? Did he not like her? Maybe she wasn’t strong enough to lead the pack and that’s why he got rid of her… Maybe he didn’t like the way she looked… I bet she was perfect. Probably just like all the other girls to choose from in my pack. Tall, thin, graceful… Everything looked for in a Luna… and they chose me.

Looking out the window, I focus on my reflection. Dark circles pop out under my green eyes, my blonde hair wild around my full cheeks. Of course, he isn’t going to choose me. I’m the last one any Alpha would choose.

“Megan!” Grandma shouts, snapping her fingers. “Don’t ignore me. We will go over what to say before our meeting. Now, we should-”

“I can’t do this!”

“What?” she asks. “What are you on about, girl?”

“Stop the car!” I shout. “W-we can get out here! And we can just go-”

“Go? Go where?” She asks, her brows fur.

“I-I…. I don’t know!” I shout, looking around. “Go back! Yes, tell them it was a mistake! We could just explain that Alpha Zane would be better off with.”

“No,” Grandma says, grabbing my chin. “Megan, there is no going back. You were picked. There is no back, only forward.”

My vision blurs, “B-but.”

“Listen to me. I understand you’re scared. But you’re a Penswith and we do not run away. We hold our heads high and we take whatever is thrown at us.”

“He’s not going to want me.” I sob.

“Then he’s a fool... Megan, do you know why they chose you?”

Shaking my head, I blink at her.

“Because I told them to.”

WHAT!? What was she saying!? “Y-yo-you!? W-why? Grandma, don’t you know what he did to his last L-L-Luna?”

“Rumors!” she snorts. “Not everything you hear is true, my girl. I thought you were better than all that wolf gossip.”

“Grandma! I-I-”

“Will be a perfect Luna,” she says, leaning back in her seat. “We are not going back. You will be the next Luna of Dark Moon and Alpha Zane… Well, leave him to me. If he is as smart as everyone claims, I’ll be the judge of that. Then everything will work out fine.”

My stomach’s still twisting in knots, but I bite my tongue. Grandma’s made up her mind and when she’s made it up. You won’t convince her otherwise.

Chapter 2- Negotiations

Pulling up outside a large log cabin, my nerves have reached their breaking point. Though I’m still reeling from Grandma’s confession, I’m happy she is here. She wasted no time taking charge of all the luggage and barking orders to the people making their way down the steps. All while I stand frozen, staring at the massive house that’s to be my new home.

“You made it!” shouts a tall man from the top step. His shirt flexes over his muscles as he makes his way down. “Edna, it’s so great to see you again, and this must be Megan?”

Forcing my best smile, I hold out my hand, intending to shake his. However, he seems to have other plans as he lightly grips my fingers, kissing the back of my knuckles.

“Welcome to The Dark Moon Pack.” He says a slow smile curves his lips as the wind tassels his short brown hair. Goddess, he’s handsome…

Blushing, I pull my hand back.

“That’s enough, Hunter!” Grandma snaps, but not with her usual tone. “Show us in already. It’s fr
